The President plays an instrumental role in:
stewardship of human, financial and property resources of F Stop by facilitating effective Board and Management decision-making and through the use of processes and controls;
aligning F Stop Board and Committee actions with the core objectives and strategic direction of F Stop;
fostering a productive relationship with the staff based on partnership and accountability;
serving as a spokesperson for the F Stop Board and membership;
fostering an environment where the F Stop’s Board's governance practices are recognized for being thoughtful and reflective of the organization's and stakeholders' needs.
chairing Board meetings, unless the role is delegated to another Officer
Key Responsibilities of the President:
Strategic Direction and Implementation Plans: The Board President has a key role in arranging and planning for the Board’s periodic strategic planning session and monitoring the implementation of such plans in association with the Executive Director;
Board Effectiveness: The Board President has a key role in presiding over F Stop Board meetings, setting the Board agenda, using the time and resources of the Board wisely, overseeing that there is maximum support for decisions of the F Stop Board and that its decisions are effectively communicated and implemented. This role includes building consensus among Officers to facilitate decisions and ensuring that all views are considered during the decision-making process, and referring new issues to the appropriate Committee for investigation or follow-up;
Constructive Relationship with the Executive Director: The relationship between the Executive Director and the Board Chair is critical to the success of F Stop and to delivering services to stakeholders. The Board Chair facilitates the relationship through regular meetings with the Executive Director, with the objective of maintaining a strong, transparent working relationship.
F Stop Board Competencies and Composition: The Board President works with the F Stop Board to identify desired skills and competencies and to ensure an effective board nominating process, leading to an F Stop Board that combines expertise and teamwork.
Recommendations for Committee Leadership and Membership Roles: The Board President, together with the Executive Director of F Stop, provides advice to the Board on proposed Committee leadership roles and Committee membership;
Stakeholder Communications: The Board President may play a direct role in executing such plans as agreed with the Executive Director;
Governance Effectiveness: The Board Chair plays a key role in the timely review and updating of Board Policies and Bylaws in consultation with the Board of F Stop and the Executive Director;
Director Performance: The Board Chair works with the F Stop Board to promote meeting efficiency and with individual directors on individual director performance and related Board performance. This may include facilitating board member self-assessments;
Leadership: The Board Chair advances and articulates the vision of F Stop and its objectives and speaks on behalf of the Board concerning its decisions;
Review of Management Performance: Working with the Executive Director, the Board President assists in the annual performance reviews of F Stop staff members;
Compliance with Applicable Laws and F Stop Policies: The Board President plays a key role in ensuring that F Stop complies with applicable laws and reporting requirements and that the F Stop Board and the organisation follow F Stop Policies.
